Daniel's Cake

My friend wanted all her husband's favourite things to be incorporated in the cake and wanted them in 3D. I was quite happy with the cake until delivery time. Because the cake structure for the golf bag wasn't strong enough, and while carrying down the stairs and in the car, the structure moved and caused the bottom tier of the cake to crack and break...so the entire cake sank 3 inches to the bottom. Thank God that the fondant didn't crack that badly and i was able to patch up a bit. But the cake ended up looking like saggy old bag with a heavy bottom. I was sooo upset and disappointed with myself for not going with my instincts that the structure wasn't strong enough.  I told my husband 5 times that I think the rod isn't strong enough but he kept saying it is OK and reassured me that it will be alright. True enough, my worse fears happened right before my eyes, the cake cracked and moved.. my heart sank  and i almost cried.

My friend was very nice about it and comforted me and she just called to tell me that nobody at the party noticed the golfbag cake sagged until she mentioned it. But honestly, I'm still feeling quite lousy about it.  My heart ached further when I saw the after party photo of the sagging cake and tilting to one side.  I think I'll need some time to recover..

Everything is made with edible material. The golf bag, notebook, and keyboard all are made of cake, sushi is made with cakeballs, xrays are handpainted gelatine sheets and the rest of the stuff made with gumpaste and RKT.

Lesson learnt:  Trust my own instinct and always insist on a stronger structure when everyone else say otherwise...cos only I know how my cake is going to turn out... I think I should learn how to do carpentry work too instead of relying on others.... lol!

I planned to bake this week's HCB cake but i think now i'm too sad & disappointed to want to bake anything after my golfbag cake sank...

Faithy, I am truly in awe and stunned. Spectacular doesn't even
come close to describing this cake.
It is always maddening to go against one's own instincts but now you know. And honestly, I think one little bit of saggy golf bag is nothing compared to the rest of this cake. I'm sure they would have rather had this magnificent creation than a bakery cake.

What an amazing cake. I can´t figure out how you did everything on it. Really good work!

'Faithy, that is an amazing number of details! Do you draw the cake out on a piece of paper before you create them? It's awesome that you manage to incorporate everything and they all fit with each other! I understand it must be devastating that the cake sank, but you truly did a great job, and I'm sure your friend appreciates it a lot.
Btw, how did you make the music note details? Do you draw it with edible pen?

Girl, you rock, this is amazing. I can't believe what you have done here.
you should be really proud of your work.
I'm sorry for the little accident, I'm sure everyone loved and it made it to the talk of the evening for sure.
Really I'm giving you a big WOW!!

Wow - this looks so amazing. I'm sure everyone was in awe even if the bag wasn't perfect. But I'm sure it would bug me alittle bit too if I knew it was perfect.

Thank you Vicki, Cris, Sarah, Jenn, Haniela, Barbara & Dhanya for your kind and comforting words! I'm feeling much better already..and so ready for next cake..hahaha

@Jenn: I do a rough sketch first so i know how to work on the structure of the cake..but i don't really draw out anything cos my drawing sucks big time..hahaha.. nobody can decipher what i draw out except me! hahaha ..So the idea and picture is in my mind but i just can't print out only..LOL! Yes, i drew the musical notes with edible food markers. :)

The cake looks absolutely amazing! I really have to look at the pictures very closely to see what's wrong with it.

Wow -- this is awesome! I had to make a computer cake last weekend and thought that was a lot of work. Then I see that your computer cake is only one small piece of your entire project. You should feel proud of how great it turned out. Your friends are very lucky to have you.

This cake is amazing! Try not to be too upset about the sagging (easy enough to say but I can't help but focus on the imperfections of any cake that I make) and can't wait to see your next creation!

Faithy! AMAZING.....they each outdo the last one! And this is NO exception....I'm in awe of all the details. And I can guarantee if you didn't say anything about the sagging, most people would not have even noticed. I know how it feels to be disappointed in cake, but know that the next cake is a chance to be even better than you were yesterday. You have AMAZING skills and an eye for art...don't let this slow you down!

I can't wait to see your next masterpiece!

Faithy, you've been missed! Thank goodness you got my email. HAHA!

Faithy, again, I sincerely think you're VERY good. How I wish I can achieve this much, like what you'd done here. You'd put in awe once again after the Food Cake. Amazing!

Please don't be discouraged by the little accident. I'm sure, like what you've said here, your friend and the party guests all appreciated the cake. You're being too harsh on yourself, which creates pressure. Not good on your health lor.

I think you're really good. No matter how and what you think about yourself, you already have established a place in my heart as a great cake decorator and baker. =)

P.S. I die-die wanna see you when I'm in SG again. LOL! While I can't do much with maybe just some cookies/bars and other souvenirs, I wanna see how you work with fondants. HAHA!

This cake is beyond Spectacular !!! every single detail. You are truly an artist. I can imagine how you put all together. Do be upset about what happened to the cake, we learn from our mistakes, but please, do not trust your husband when it comes to cakes. I am telling you this for experience.

We need to pick you up and get you right back on the cake baking wagon. You are such a talented lady and mistakes happen. Your friend received a birthday cake so advanced from what professional shops will deliver. Please don't beat yourself up over this so much. I understand your disappointment BUT you already know how to fix this for next time =). The cake and ALL the components to this dessert are stunning!

Hugs faithy... i'd feel awfully sad too. Being a perfectionist, these accidents are not acceptable. But you know what?

The cake is more than that! It's made of love and more love. So, don't be too upset ok??

xx

Oh my gosh, what an incredible cake!! Don't be too upset about the sagging, especially since nobody noticed until it was pointed out to them - this is beautiful!

Marj said...

Soooo wonderful! How many hours did you put into this amazing creation? No wonder you took it personally (just like I would!) when the golf bag didn't behave when you moved it. I think all cake decorators should take an engineering course - ha ha! Keep up the good work - you are very talented!

Amazing, Faithy! Sorry your golf bag sagged, but it might have made it look more realistic if not perfect. I'm so impressed by your wonderful details!

I know I am late, but WOW!!! Faithy this looks GREAT!! And I am sure even with the mishap it still looked just as good!!

Vickii said...

I'm sorry for your disappointment Faithy but like your friend confirmed, nobody would have been able to tear their eyes away from this spectacular cake as a whole to focus on a tiny little saggy golf bag - besides, I thought golf bags (and bags of any kind) were supposed to be slightly saggy!

This is once again, absolutely incredible! Well done Faithy!

Hi Faithy, Hope you've been fine. I am always curious about your new postings cos your cakes just keep getting better.

Btw, can I ask you how you managed to get such a deep red for the rose? No matter how much gel colouring I put I can't get that lovely deep red that is shown in your picture. Appreciate any tips you may have.

Thanks!

Hearts and Hands said...

Hi Faithy, many thanks for the tip on getting red fondant. Will give that a go. tinting it is a pain and you are right, it gets a bit too sticky with too much colour!
